Malayil Kudubam Down The Ages
The Legacy of the Christian Church in Kerala and the Malayil Family
The Christian Church in Kerala traces its origins to the ministry of St. Thomas, the apostle of Jesus Christ, who is believed to have arrived in the region in the first century A.D. Among the early centers of Christian civilization in Kerala was Kuravilangad, a settlement in Central Kerala known for its deep-rooted Christian heritage.
Migration and Settlement
In the early eleventh century, some Christian families from Kuravilangad migrated to Chengannur. These families were granted the privilege of participating in certain rituals associated with the Hindu temples in the region. In recognition of their dedication and sincere service, the temple authorities conferred upon them the honorary title of “Tharakan.” Even today, names such as Tharakan (Tharian), Kunjummen, and Pothen stand as reminders of the esteemed status these families once held.
The Christian families of Chittoor, Panavelil, and Kadathottu in Chengannur are believed to be descendants of these early settlers from Kuravilangad. Their primary occupations were agriculture and trade, contributing significantly to their community’s growth and stability. They established a thriving Christian community in Chengannur and built a church through their collective efforts. Today, the Syrian Church of Chengannur stands on the site where these settlers once built their ancient place of worship, preserving the legacy of their faith and perseverance.
Expansion to Kadambanadu, Omalloor, and Punnackadu
By the mid-seventeenth century, four Christian families moved from Chengannur to Kadambanadu, about 30 miles away. They maintained their religious fervour, seamlessly integrating with the local Christian community and earning love and acceptance.
As time passed, the eighteenth century brought another shift—this time to Omalloor, where they resided for nearly fifty years, preserving their Christian identity and commitment to faith.
Finally, in A.D. 1750, these four families moved to Punnackadu (present-day Pathanamthitta district). They acquired land—the Kochettu plot, located south of the present Marthoma Church—from local Muslim landowners. As the families expanded, three of them later moved to Puthethu, Thundiyeth, and Ramanchira, further strengthening the Christian presence in the region.
The Legacy of Malayil Tharian
The head of the family that remained in Kochettu was Tharian, who had two sons:
- Pothen, the elder son, who later relocated to Laheth Kizhakkethil
- Itty, who continued to live at Kochettu
Pothen of Laheth Kizhakkethil had three sons:
- Tharian
- Pothen
- Kunjummen
Malayil Tharian: A Pillar of Faith and Vision
The eldest son, Tharian, was born in 956 M.E. At the age of 17, he married Mariamma, daughter of Kanjikkal Koshy of Elanthoor. He later moved from Laheth Kizhakkethil to Malayil, where he became a towering personality, known for his deep faith and visionary leadership.
A man of foresight and dedication, Malayil Tharian expanded agricultural lands, ensuring prosperity for his family and future generations. His commitment to the Christian faith led him to collaborate with Puthuchira Easo (from Kuzhikala), Puliyelil Chummar (from Kidanganoor), and Vettinilkunnathil Kurian (from Nellanikkunnu). Together, they approached the CMS missionary Rev. Joseph Peet, then stationed at Mavelikara, and with his consent, established a church at Kuzhikala, introducing the CMS tradition to the region. Tharian served as the Church Warden at Kuzhikala for many years, playing a vital role in its growth.
Malayil Tharian had six sons, who later established different branches of the family:
- Pothen – Melekuttu
- Koshy – Pilaparambu
- Itty – Punnoreth North
- Varughese – Punnoreth North
- Thariyan – Alunilkkunnathil
- Kunjummen – Malayil
After a long and fruitful life of 82 years, Malayil Tharian entered eternity, leaving behind a legacy of faith, perseverance, and leadership. His wife Mariamma was called to rest at the age of 80. Their memorable achievements and unwavering commitment to faith and family remain a beacon of inspiration for future generations.
